The Cobbs Creek section of southwest Philadelphia, like much of the city, is facing increasing development pressures, causing some seniors to be priced out of housing. Meanwhile, the financial impacts of maintaining an older house can prove difficult for those with fixed incomes. The goal of the Community of Compassion CDC of Cobbs Creek was to provide much-needed affordable senior housing so that long-time residents can stay in the neighborhood. The development consists of 38 one-bedroom apartments with amenity spaces and a large community room fronting the street. Designed to meet Enterprise Green Communities certification, the project reflects the CDC’s desire to draw inspiration from the historic context of neighboring brick rowhouses with front porches.
