Cornell Library

Study Spaces

Swarthmore College engaged CICADA Architecture/Planning to reimagine underutilized areas of the Cornell Library of Science and Engineering to better respond to and support the changing needs of students post-pandemic. Although the first floor had been recently updated, the building lacked sufficient and diverse study space. CICADA worked with the College to transform the ground floor—made available through a thoughtful deaccessioning of library materials—into a welcoming, flexible environment designed around varied student learning styles. The renovation features a range of seating options and study zones, creating an atmosphere of comfort and academic focus.

Situated at the edge of Swarthmore’s Crum Woods, the library’s renovation draws inspiration from its natural surroundings. A warm, vibrant color palette and natural materials help create a modern “living room” experience within the academic setting. Soft seating, warm wood tones, and layered textures contribute to an inviting, inclusive space that encourages students to linger, collaborate, and recharge.

To support a variety of study styles, custom table lamps with integrated outlets were added to side tables, while high-top communal tables provide another seating option with built-in connectivity. Because the existing floor is concrete, an under-carpet system discreetly routes wiring from wall outlets to the lamps and work tables—ensuring students can easily plug in wherever they choose to sit. This renovation brings fresh energy to the student-facing areas of the library and reflects CICADA’s commitment to creating flexible and beautifully crafted learning environments rooted in both comfort and purpose.
