Cornell Library

Interiors

The Cornell Library of Science and Engineering at Swarthmore College is a busy study hub for undergraduate students, and although the first floor had been recently renovated, the library still did not provide an adequate amount and type of study space for students. The school recognized an opportunity to increase study space on the ground floor by deaccessioning a portion of their collection and removing the associated shelving. Recognizing that students have different learning styles, the school emphasized including diverse seating types that would promote an ambiance of comfort where students would feel welcomed and encouraged to stay.

The library’s location at the edge of Swarthmore’s beautiful Crum Woods (which can be viewed from inside) inspired a warm and vibrant color palette which stands out against a neutral backdrop. To achieve a “living room” feel, there is comfortable soft seating with warm wood tones and mixed materials.

Custom table lamps with power outlets for laptops are integrated into the side tables, whereas high-top communal tables offer another seating option with built-in connectivity as well. And with the existing floor being concrete, an under-carpet power system was used to extend power cables from the walls to the end table lamps in the soft seating area and the high-top work tables. This renovation brings a fresh energy to the library and welcomes students with a multitude of ways to connect and enrich their learning.
