The exterior work includes the replacement of all existing windows with EnergyStar windows, replacement of all exterior roofing, new ADA-compliant railings, and new siding to replace existing vinyl siding. The interior work includes all new interior finishes, new kitchen cabinets, counters, and appliances; new bathroom finishes with water-conserving fixtures, new energy-efficient lighting, new high-efficient gas furnaces, hot water heaters, and air-conditioning. The building will also offer amenities that support senior health and wellness and has been designed to promote social interactions and connect residents to both their neighbors within the building as well as those of the broader St. Hugh community. Communal lounge spaces will be provided throughout the building such as a large community room in the basement, the common living room on the second floor, and the roof terrace on the third floor all of which provide informal meetings and social interactions and promote community among the residents. The existing parking area will be reconfigured to provide an outdoor seating and gathering area with raised planting beds for ease of use by the seniors. Replacing the rotted ground floor framing and solving the groundwater problem that led to it made the ground floor habitable again. In a similar fashion as the manor house, the new was built upon the foundations of the original mid-century visitor’s center, but was greatly expanded to accommodate additional program elements including museum, auditorium, offices, gift shop and other public amenities. Similar to the manor house the building is constructed of timber framing, and is clad on the front façade in brick and transitions to lap siding in the back. This is re-interpreted in a contemporary way by exposing the framing on the inside corridor and carrying it through to the outside pergolas that extend outwards, guiding visitors from the parking area through to the gardens.
