PHA Affordable Housing

As part of The Philadelphia Housing Authority’s push to revitalize a formerly forlorn neighborhood east of Temple University, the North Central Phase II rental housing development is being built by Shoemaker/Synterra with CICADA as designer. This infill project includes 53 new rental buildings on 29 parcels with a total of 89 new units across nine urban blocks. The new buildings fit into a grid of occupied older rowhomes, vacant lots, other newly developed homes, playgrounds, churches, stores and parking lots. CICADA worked with PHA and a tenants’ council to design urban, contemporary façades that fit in with the existing rowhomes. The new buildings range from two- and three-story single family rowhomes to three-story, multi-family buildings. There will be nine accessible units and two units for the hearing/visually impaired. Two of the buildings will house seniors aged 55 and older and one will house a Community Center for use by the residents as well as a management office to facilitate the needs of the new community. The project will be seeking certification from LEED and Enterprise Green Communities.
