Freire Charter School

Freire Charter School, operator of a successful college preparatory high school in Center City, realized that their educational model worked best if introduced at the middle school level. After helping Freire analyze a number of site alternatives, CICADA was engaged to document and design renovations to the historic F.W.Woolworth Building at 1026 Market Street to create that middle school. Occupying the ground and second floors, the school includes 18 classrooms, an Art Room, Science Lab and Computer Lab, all equipped with cutting edge information systems and arrayed to maximize exposure to natural light. Meeting a very tight schedule the project was a collaborative team effort involving Freire, their Owner’s Rep, the General Contractor and CICADA working along with consultants. The design began in late winter of 2011 and achieved occupancy in August of the following year.
